July marks a stabilization of imports with a very subtle increase if we compare it to the previous month reaching a total of 3797 FCL. The import statics keep on reflecting the consistency of the market for Vannamei imports.
Country of Origin
The imports from India and Thailand have stabilized after a slight increase in recent months. With India stabilizing at around the 570 FCL containers mark and Thailand at 130 FCL.
On the other hand, countries like Saudi Arabia and Peru seem to have a smaller share of the imports. But overall July maintained a steady flow of Vannamei shrimp imports, and while India and Thailand remained key contributors, Saudi Arabia’s 58 FCL indicated consistent engagement in the market.
Ecuadorian Shrimp Imports from January to June 2023 by Province and Month
A detailed analysis of the Ecuadorian shrimp imports by province marks a shift in the leading role of Guangdong as the key importing region and placing Shandong as the key destination of Ecuadorian imports with almost 650 FCL. The rest of provinces follow this upward trend, and we see increases in the import volume of Tianjin, Zhejiang or Liaoning provinces, and an overall increase of more than 100 FCL if we compare total volume of containers imported from Ecuador to China in July reaching 2740 FCL and placing July as the 3rd month with the largest volume of imports of Ecuadorian shrimp this year, only behind May and March.

Guangdong and the southern provinces shine as major players in the shrimp industry, particularly when we dive into India’s import data. Guangdong and Zhejiang are soaring high, making up a whopping 70% of total imports, clocking in at 236 and 158 containers respectively in June. On the global front, import volumes seem to settle around the 570 FCL mark, and the upcoming months will reveal if India’s exports can keep scaling greater heights.
