We provide you with detailed import figures from January to May 2023, a crucial period to understand the latest trends and patterns in the Chinese shrimp market. These statistics shed light on the main supplying countries, the quantities imported, and we will also provide detailed information on the main importing regions in China in an attempt to decipher where the best business opportunities will be found in the coming months.

From January to May, China imported approximately 17,000 containers, sustaining a monthly volume exceeding 2,500 containers, with notable increases in March and May.

The origin of these imports was prominently Ecuador, accounting for nearly 74% of the total exports in the early months of the year with around 13,000 containers. India trailed significantly with 2065 containers. It’s important to note that Indian exports to China are primarily shrimp tails; hence, if we consider whole product imports, Ecuador’s role becomes even more significant. Other key contributors include Thailand, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Peru, but all except Thailand had total volumes under 500 containers.

A detailed analysis of Ecuadorian shrimp imports by province reveals a similar volume of imports when the country is divided into northern and southern provinces. However, the northern provinces of Shandong, Tianjin, and Beijing account for up to 43% of total Ecuadorian shrimp imports. The distribution of shrimp in the southern provinces is more dispersed, although Guangdong stands out, comprising up to 23% of China’s total imports in early 2023 with 1995 containers.

Ecuadorian Shrimp Imports from January to May 2023 by Province and Month:

The monthly consumption analysis in the six main provinces highlights consumption peaks in Guangdong in March, with more than 900 containers, and in the northern provinces in February.

Monthly Imports from India:

It’s worth noting that, unlike Ecuador, most of the products from India are shrimp tails. The volume of tail imports is heavily concentrated in Guangdong province due to the Cantonese cuisine’s preference for this type of product. The tails are directly supplied to the local food service sector, and the local reprocessing industry also relies on tails for subsequent peeling and repackaging to meet the local industry requirements. The second-highest consuming province would be Zhejiang, followed by Shandong, Tianjin, Fujian, and finally Shanghai.
