Considering the Chinese New Year festivities, the data on shrimp imports into China takes on additional context. Typically, there’s an increase in demand for shrimp around this period as it is a popular dish for celebrations.

The Chinese New Year in 2024 occurred later in the year, which allowed importers to continue receiving shipments in January intended for consumption during the festivities.

In light of this, the substantial growth in imports from Ecuador, which spiked by 84% in January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, can be partially attributed to this delayed festive demand. India’s exports to China, showing a growth of 10%, and Thailand’s remarkable 100% increase, are also likely influenced by the festive season’s demand.

Saudi Arabia’s exports to China skyrocketed by 1494% from January 2023 to January 2024, indicating that, although starting from a smaller base, Saudi shrimp may have become particularly popular or more widely available in time for the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Peru’s increase of 36% in the same month also fits this trend.

On the other hand, Indonesia saw a drastic decrease of 90% in January 2024, which may suggest that, despite the overall increase in demand for shrimp during the festive period, Indonesia was unable to capitalize on this opportunity. This could be reflective of issues such as competitive pricing, availability, or perhaps quality preferences in the Chinese market.

The fluctuation in February’s import data could indicate a post-festival adjustment, as Ecuador’s imports fell by 16%, suggesting a potential correction after a January high. The continued growth from India and Thailand indicates sustained demand even after the festivities. Peru’s dramatic turnaround to a 122% increase in February 2024, after no exports in the previous year, and Indonesia’s resurgence with a 101% rise, are particularly noteworthy, possibly reflecting a strategic realignment or recovery in production capabilities that allowed them to take advantage of the extended festive period for shrimp consumption.

The interplay between festive demand and the intricacies of the shrimp trade with China demonstrates the sensitivity of this market to cultural events, and the importance of timing in meeting consumer demands.
