The Shanghai epidemic hit the supply of imported seafood and salmon sales fell to a record low.

Last weekend, the epidemic in Shanghai entered a serious stage. All wholesale seafood markets, including the Jiangyang market, have suspended retail and wholesale trade, and the timing of reopening has not been determined.

Some importers said that the Ecuadorian vannamei shrimp could not pass through customs, and the shortage of supply caused an increase of 30-50 yuan per box. Another source said that, to some extent, the port of Shanghai was in some difficulty. Although officially refused, the difficulty of customs clearance and delivery was significant.

Salmon imports have not been completely suspended, but the airport’s actual purchases are already very small. Customs, inspection and quarantine agencies, customs declaration and cargo terminals are understaffed and there is too much uncertainty for importers. In addition, there are already fewer international flights, some foreign airlines have canceled flights and the remaining seats have been reduced to a minimum. Salmon purchases at Shanghai airport have reached an all-time low.

The Shanghai Jiangyang market was closed on April 1, wholesale and retail operations were suspended, and the specific reopening time is uncertain. Local supply in Shanghai has basically stagnated and the restaurant industry has shut down.

At the same time, Norwegian salmon prices have risen sharply this week, with quotations of all sizes exceeding NOK 100, reaching an all-time high. Analysts believe that the increase in prices for Norwegian salmon is mainly related to the increase in demand before Easter in Europe and the United States, but it is a great challenge for the Asian market.

Importers are more cautious when ordering new products. Some importers apply for a small amount through the port of Guangzhou, but there is still a chance of random inspection and seizure.
