The import of vannamei shrimp in China has resumed, and increased by 12% to 611,000 tons in 2021.

China’s warm-water frozen shrimp imports in 2021 increased by 12% year-on-year to 611,000 metric tons. Imports of 2021 are only 6% lower than the 649,000 tones in 2019, although 2019‘s consumption of imported seafood was at its peak at the time.

From the data point of view, the import of vannamei shrimp basically recovered in 2021.

Chinese imports from Ecuador increased by 19% in 2021, making Ecuador the largest supplier to China with 379,000 tones. This increases Ecuador’s share of China’s total shrimp imports from 52% in 2020 to 62% in 2021.

China also imported 117,000 tones of shrimp from India, the second largest supplier, up 11% year-on-year and equivalent to 19% of China’s total imports – the same as in 2020.
