ChinaTip #0472

Norwegian salmon exports to China fell 69% in August, compared with the same period of last year.

According to data from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), the total Norwegian seafood exports fell by 14% in August. As the largest growth market for the Norwegian seafood exports, China’s low demand has impacted dramatically the decrease. In August, Norway’s seafood exports to China amounted 214 million Norwegian kroner, a 54% decrease from the same period of last year.

Chinese consumer trust in salmon was hit two times in the last months. Salmon catering and retail market have shrunk both.

At present, the Chinese salmon catering market has recovered about 70% – 80%, but the retail market is still depressed. It is expected that the salmon demand might increase in the autumn.
