ChinaTip #0504

China’s new test on Ireland brown crabs increases difficulty to export.

China requires testing of cadmium content in imported crabs, making it difficult for Ireland to export crabs to China.

According to the Irish Marine Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA), the extra time to test and wait for the results of export documents makes shipping to China an increasingly difficult task for Irish exporters. Since the test takes a certain amount of time, it has a relatively large impact on live crabs, but has no impact on frozen products.

The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) regularly tests seafood in retail stores and restaurants. Excessive cadmium content is the “main problem” in the testing of imported shellfish.

In the past few years, Some European crabs have been banned from entering the Chinese market due to excessive cadmium.
