ChinaTip #0484

Canadian lobster exports to China are gradually recovering.

According to the data issued by the Lobster Commission of Canada (LCC), from January to February, the Canadian lobsters export to China dropped from 4,323 tons to only 473 tons. In only one month, Canadian lobster exports to China fell by 90%. The dramatic decrease could be explained by the sluggish sales in February. In the pandemic, many restaurants in China suspended business and a large number of international flights were cancelled.

However, since March the export volume of Canadian live lobster to China started to recover. COVID-19 infestation cases of seafood package discovered in June and July didn’t impact the Canadian exports.

With September, it starts the lobster sales season in China. From October to January of each year is the peak season for the Canadian live lobster exports to China, because many popular events are held during this period: Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, Double Eleven Shopping Festival and Chinese New Year are all during this period.
