Midsummer is the consumption season of various types of shrimps such as Macrobrachium rosenbergii, vannamei shrimp and penaeus japonicus. They have increased in quantity and their prices have dropped significantly.
A person in charge of a supermarket in Shanghai told us that with a large number of shrimps on the market, the current overall price has dropped significantly compared with June.
Live Penaeus japonicus shrimp was 199 cny/500g in June, and now it has dropped to 129 cny/500g. Live Cocktail shrimp was 42.9cny /500g, but now it is 29.9 cny /500g.
During the interview, we learned that due to the decline in consumption in the previous period this year, the prices of various types of shrimp have dropped to varying degrees this year.
The continued decline in shrimp prices has led to an increase in purchases. From another supermarket chain in Shanghai we learned that the daily purchases are basically sold out quickly in the store, and more orders are placed on holidays than usual.
In addition to fresh food supermarkets, many distributors also stock up on inventory when prices are low. We verified in the warehouse of an online fresh food retail company that the entire warehouse was full.
In recent years, domestic consumers’ demand for shrimp has been increasing, and their requirements for quality are also getting higher and higher. In the past, the purchasing of shrimp at a price of 20 to 30 cny per pound was stronger. Now, the sales of 40 to 50 cny per pound of shrimp have increased significantly, and there is also a large consumer market for more than 100 cny.
