Temporary Lift in China’s White Shrimp Market – But Trouble May Be Just Below the Surface

A Surprising Surge

After months of slow movement, China’s white shrimp market saw a welcome surprise in early April: prices of imported shrimp jumped by ¥5.00–15.00 per carton, and sales volumes picked up quickly. The driving force? A combination of factors. With May Day approaching, demand surged — but most wholesalers had kept inventories low for months due to weak consumer spending. As a result, many rushed to replenish stock, creating a short-term sales boom.
At the same time, a weakened RMB pushed up import costs, and February’s low imports from Ecuador (just 2,400 containers) led to tight supply. Market velocity has increased, but how long will it last?

Live Shrimp on the Horizon

Domestic live shrimp is still scarce, especially in larger sizes, and prices have risen. But that’s about to change. By mid-June, a significant wave of domestic live shrimp will hit the market. Farmers, motivated by tariff pressures and rising costs, have increased breeding this year — and that incoming supply could push imported shrimp into a seasonal downturn. Still, larger sizes like 30/40 remain a safe zone for imported shrimp, since most domestic shrimp are smaller (40/50 and down).

Importers Stay Wary

Despite the recent sales boost, importers remain cautious. Many believe this is a temporary rise, not a sustainable trend. Terminal demand is still weak, and the RMB’s volatility — tied closely to the ongoing U.S.–China tariff war — adds another layer of risk. Adding pressure: as Chinese exports to the U.S. shrink, domestic processors are buying less imported shrimp. Meanwhile, Vietnam and Thailand are increasing exports to China, thanks to zero tariffs — a shift that could further squeeze Ecuador’s share.

Conclusion: A Market in Motion

April’s spike feels good — but it may be short-lived. With June’s live shrimp harvest looming and economic pressure mounting, this is a time for strategic buying, not overconfidence.

Focus on larger sizes, avoid overstocking, and prepare for turbulence ahead. The next 6–8 weeks will shape the summer season.
