Since the beginning of this year, China’s import volume of edible aquatic products has increased significantly. In May, the import volume of these products reached 360,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%.
Among them, the import volume of warm water shrimp, or vannamei shrimp, was 57,000 tons, accounting for nearly 16%. From the perspective of the source country composition, China mainly imports warm water shrimp products from Ecuador, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Venezuela and Indonesia.
In May, imports of shrimp products from Ecuador accounted for 63% of total imports. The import volume of Ecuadorian shrimp was 36,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 50%.
From January to May, the import volume of Ecuadorian shrimp was 193,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 36%.
Shrimp, the most popular seafood product among Chinese consumers, will continue to grow in household consumption. The domestic shrimp market is huge, and the market supply is largely dependent on imports. Import growth will be a long-term trend.
