Due to the rising cost of production, packaging and transportation caused by the epidemic, the shrimp industry in Ecuador will once again enter a dark period.
The chairman of the Ecuadorian Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA) called on the entire industry to be better organized to overcome current challenges. “Exporters are experiencing a crisis. A new round of the epidemic has caused a drop in market consumption and panic in the short and medium term. Orders have been reduced or put on hold. The situation from the end of this year to the beginning of next year is probably very complicated.”
As of the 48th week of this year (November 29-December 5), the purchase price of large-sized shrimp raw materials in Ecuador has continued to fall, while small and medium-sized shrimp have rebounded.
The price of 20/30 (per kilogram) fell to $5.50/kg;
The 30/40 rose to $4.50/kg;
40/50 to $4.15/kg;
50/60 to $3.70/kg;
60/70 to $3.50/kg;
70/80 to $3.30/kg;
80/100 to $3.00/kg;
100/120 to $2.00/kg;
120/140 to $2.20/kg.
Since mid-October, the purchase of shrimp has been reduced by about 30% compared with the previous few months. Most of the current cold storage is filled with unsold products.
We can only hope that sales will improve in January.
