Vietnam’s seafood exports to China declined in the first five months, but exports of processed vannamei and black tiger shrimp doubled.

According to statistics from VASPE, Vietnam’s seafood exports to China have continued to decline in the past two months. As a result, seafood exports to China fell by 6% in the first five months of 2021.

Beginning in April 2021, Vietnam’s seafood exports to China fell by 11%, and continued to decline further in May, down 22%. Among them, exports of all major product categories have fallen sharply: shrimp fell by 35%, other marine fish (except tuna) fell by 23%, and catfish fell by 5%.

The impact of COVID and China’s quarantine measures have led to two obvious trends in Vietnam’s seafood exports to China: the export of fresh/frozen products has dropped sharply, while the export of dried and processed products has increased.

Fresh/live/frozen black tiger shrimp exports fell by 25% in May and 26% in the first five months of this year, while processed black tiger prawns increased by 278% to US$1.4 million.

In the first five months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of frozen vannamei shrimp to China increased by 2% to US$67 million, while exports of processed vannamei shrimp increased by 173% to more than US$6 million. Vannamei shrimp accounted for 54% of total shrimp exports.
