Major Changes in Consumer Habits in China

A survey showed that 86% of Chinese consumers said they would eat more at home after the epidemic. In the short to medium term, the impact is obvious—the recovery of restaurants and outdoor consumption is slower than initially expected.

Although more catering services companies have resumed operations since March, weakened consumer confidence and a decline in on-site customers have led to a decline in sales. Changes in consumer habits will continue to benefit food retailing, while online consumption is also increasing rapidly because consumer home cooking habits remain unchanged in the short term.

SALES MODELS

Community supermarkets and basic consumer stores are expected to achieve a 5% to 10% year-on-year growth rate in 2020, respectively because consumers will choose to buy daily necessities at nearby community stores or deliver them online. In addition, consumers will reduce spending on non-essential goods.

PRODUCTS

In fact, not all products and packaging will work the same way. Sales of raw materials that are consumed mainly in food service establishments such as sea urchins, oysters, mussels, and other products will have less output than common fish, shrimp, and crab products because many consumers lack the method of cooking such seafood at home.
