ChinaTip #0701

In January, more than 2,400 tons of imported food to China were returned or destroyed.

In January 2022, a total of 278 batches of imported food with a total weight of 2,421.75 tons were found to be unqualified by the national customs in the port and all of them have been returned or destroyed at the port according to law.

Among them, 58 batches are frozen foods, weighing about 705 tons. From the perspective of weight, frozen products account for 29%.

Among the frozen products that are not allowed to enter the country, there are 13 batches of meat products, with a total weight of 228 tons, accounting for about 33%, from 7 countries including Russia, Australia, Chile, Ukraine, Brazil, the United States, and the United Kingdom. There are 45 batches of aquatic products with a total weight of 477 tons, accounting for about 67%, from 10 countries/regions including Ecuador, Vietnam, Peru, India, and Lithuania.

Specifically, frozen shrimp products still occupy the top spot. In terms of weight, frozen shrimp products account for 37% of the total frozen products not allowed to enter the country, which is more than chicken, pig, and cattle products combined.

The most frequent problems in frozen shrimp products are “detection of animal diseases”, “unqualified labels or inconsistent cargo certificates” and “detection of furazolidone metabolites”. The most problematic are Indian shrimp and Vietnamese shrimp.

In the non-entry information form in December last year, 5 batches of “frozen headless shrimp” products imported from India could not enter the country due to “detection of furazolidone metabolites”. In January this year, 7 batches of headless shrimp were found with the same problem, coming from Vietnam (4 batches) and India (3 batches), all of which were returned or destroyed at the Zhanjiang port.

Among the 192 tons of frozen fish products that were not allowed to enter the country, the most common species were squid (78.7 tons), octopus (55.9 tons), Basa fish (32.8 tons), and ribbonfish (16.6 tons).
