Ecuador becomes the World´s largest supplier of shrimp.

According to data from the National Aquaculture Association of Ecuador, due to strong global demand, in October, Ecuador exported 70,391 tons of shrimp worth 485 million US dollars, which is one of the largest export months so far this year.

With the increase in large-volume exports, the average unit value of Ecuadorian shrimp rose again to US$6.89 per kilogram last month, an increase of 31% compared with the same month in 2020.

Ecuador’s largest export market in October was China, which imported 33,998 tons of shrimp at an average price of US$6.68/kg, which was an increase of 30% year-on-year based. Followed by the United States, 14,283 tons, the average price is US$7.74/kg, a year-on-year increase of 43%. Ecuador’s export volume to Europe was 17,919 tons at a price of US$6.70/kg, a year-on-year increase of 25%.

Overall, Ecuador’s shrimp exports of October amounted to US$485 million, an increase of 44% year-on-year.
In the first 10 months of 2021, the export volume was 672,136 tons, a year-on-year increase of 19%.

Rabobank senior analyst Gorjan Nikolik said that Ecuador is the undoubted “new number one” in terms of export volume and current value. This year, it surpassed India, the world’s largest supplier before COVID.
